Lot no. 182
[GEOLOGY]. Lot of three works by Barthelemy Faujas de Saint Fond and Tomaso Antonio Catullo This lot includes three important works in the history of geology and volcanology. Faujas de Saint-Fond's treatise is the first edition in which the author definitively demonstrates the volcanic origin of basalt. The volume offers a detailed classification of rocks and minerals collected from various volcanoes and includes a valuable mineralogical catalogue of Etnean samples gathered by Dolomieu. The works by Catullo on fossil zoology and shells from the Venetian provinces represent the first systematic studies of the stratigraphy and palaeontology of the eastern Italian Alps. In these, the author was the first to describe the sequence of Italian secondary formations, applying a chronological method based on fossil analysis, thereby anticipating the principles of modern stratigraphy.
