Georg Dehn (1843 Hanover - 1904 Munich)
Summer evening in Venice
Atmospheric view of the lagoon city with the Grand Canal, Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), Piazzetta, St Mark's Tower (Campanile di San Marco) and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, enlivened by gondolas and a staffage of figures. Characteristic, artistically outstanding, colouristically subtle view of Venice by Dehn, who moved to Munich in 1864 and studied at the Academy under Arthur von Ramberg from 1869 to 1872. Dehn focussed on veduta painting and found his motifs on study trips to Nuremberg, Swabia, Strasbourg, Lake Constance, Tyrol, Verona and Venice, among other places. He was a board member of the Munich Artists' Co-operative and in 1896 of the "Luitpold Group". He created several stage designs for King Ludwig II of Bavaria as well as designs for the Singers' Hall in Neuschwanstein Castle (Parzival saga). Oil on canvas; l. and signed; 45 cm x 70.5 cm. Probably original frame.
