Lot no. 1801
Georg Eduard Otto Saal (1818 Koblenz - 1870 Baden-Baden)
View of Pisa
A view of the cathedral (officially the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) and the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, enlivened by a variety of figurative staffage and true to the topography and architecture, with the baptistery on the left edge of the picture. Probably a commissioned work by Saal, of whom hardly any Italian motifs are known. Saal studied landscape painting together with Hans Gude at the Düsseldorf Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer from 1842 to 1846 as a free student and in Rudolf Wiegmann's architecture class in his first year. Gude and Andreas Achenbach are likely to have awakened his interest in Norway, so that he undertook a five-month study trip to Norway in 1847. Wilhelm von Schadow then accepted him as a master student. The paintings of Norway that he subsequently produced in his studio, which were his main subject, brought him fame and recognition. Oil on canvas; signed a. r. a. dat. (18)58. 49 cm x 68 cm. Frame.
