Lot no. 1842
Georg Hom (1838 Frankfurt am Main - 1911 Berlin)
"Mignon". Original title
Life-size kneeling portrait, inspired by the literary figure of "Mignon" from Goethe's novel "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" from 1795/96, depicting a standing Italian girl with long, brunette hair in a shy pose, holding a tambourine in her right hand; dressed in a patterned, multi-coloured skirt, a white, sleeveless shirt and a light blue waistcoat; in the background a high wall with ivy hanging down from a pillar. The painting is one of the most important and at the same time best-known and most popular works by Georg Homs, who exhibited it for the first time at the Academy of Arts in 1880. It was subsequently published in a series of engravings until around 1900 and reproduced on porcelain picture plates after the painting or the engravings. The portrait painter Georg Hom received his artistic training at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main under Jakob Becker. In 1874 or 1876 he went to Berlin, where he also began to paint genre pictures, sometimes with candlelight effects. From 1876 to 1886 Hom exhibited at the Academy exhibitions in Berlin, and several times at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition from 1893 to 1898. Oil on canvas; signed lower left; remnant of the label of the Vereinigung Berliner Künstler verso. 140 cm x 78 cm. Frame.
