The landscape background is a fortified town and a fortress on a mountain ridge. Rugendas mainly painted battles from the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), the contemporary Turkish wars and camp scenes. He studied with the Augsburg painter Isaak Fisches the Elder from 1682-1687 and worked in Vienna, Venice and Rome from 1690-1695. With his depictions of battalions and paintings of horses, he was one of the most sought-after painters of his time, whose paintings found their way into numerous aristocratic collections and had a decisive influence on 18th century battle painting.
