GEORGES DESMARÉES (attr. to)
(Òsterby, 1697 - Munich, 1776)
Portrait of a Prince-Elector
Oil on canvas, 118X102 cm
The artist, of Swedish origin, is known for his work as a portrait painter and was particularly active in Germany, but his art expresses a clear influence of the French portraiture of Rigaud and Largillière. His presence in the workshop of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta in Venice at a young age is documented, before his move to Bavaria in 1728, where he became one of the most important court painters of the German Rococo.
