Lot no. 15
Georges REMI, known as HERGÉ (1907-1983) THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN REPORTER, THE BLACK ISLAND First black and white edition, 2nd plate A5, 1938, Casterman without Hergé's name on the first plate 4 coloured hors-texte, small pastedown, dark blue endpapers, 127 p. Pagination 4-127. The name of Hergé has been omitted on the 1st plate. Released in bookshops at the end of November 1938. On receipt of the first album to come out of the press, on 22 November 1938, Hergé criticised: "I have received the album 'L'Île Noire'. It looks fine. I say 'fine', not 'very fine': the cover. I had sent you a mock-up with the name Hergé above 'Les aventures de Tintin, reporter'. No Hergé. The design doesn't seem as polished as usual. Among other things, I had indicated green lines in Tintin's kilt, which looked very Scottish. All that's left of those lines is the black outline...". Lesne replied the following day: "We can make up for your name on the cover for part of the edition. As not all the covers are glued to the boards, it will be possible to print your name on those that are still to be glued". Brand new condition. Boards immaculate, spine in bright red cloth, headpieces impeccable, inner sections well white and homogeneous. One of the rare copies of the first printing without Hergé's name.
