Lot no. 1
Georges REMI, known as HERGÉ (1907-1983)
THE NEW EXPLOITS OF QUICK & FLUPKE BRUSSELS KIDS
2nd series
2nd Plat P4, 1932, Les éditions du Petit Vingtième, red cloth spine
Numbered copy signed Quick by Hergé on the right and Flupke by his wife Germaine Kieckens on the left. 10th thousand. This album will be referenced in the next BDM.
As with the adventures of Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo, and as with the first series of exploits by our two heroes, the first edition of this album was divided into 10 series of a thousand copies. Here again, the series were incomplete and the total production fell far short of 10,000 copies, making this first edition a rarity, as is the case with all the editions printed by Le Petit Vingtième.
In addition to the low print run of albums published by Le Petit Vingtième, the poor quality of the printing of the image on the front cover, the paper, the cardboard, the interiors and the cloth spines mean that it is very rare to find albums with little or no restoration.
This album was part of Hergé's personal collection, hence the presence of the Studios Hergé stamp on the title page. It seems that he numbered this album himself at the time, as it is a 10th edition and not a first edition. Hergé affixed a number 2 to this exceptional album from his personal collection, suggesting that he had created a small pre-series for his own use.
Faced with the popularity of Tintin and the increased work generated by his successes, following the example of Disney, in 1950 the Hergé studio, which became Hergé dessinateur, evolved to become Studios Hergé based on Avenue Louise in Brussels. The importance of this album lies in the fact that once it had been created, Hergé stamped it with the Studios stamp, a copy that he had kept with him since its release.
To date, we know of only one series of Quick and Flupke albums, of which this is one, in which Hergé, during his lifetime, affixed the Studios Hergé stamp, thus confirming his attachment to the characters he created at the same time as Tintin.
Exceptional copy with good integrity and homogeneity, red spine in good condition without restoration, interior in excellent condition.
This unique album belonged to Hergé and was part of a special edition produced directly by and for the author. A museum piece due to its provenance.
