Lot no. 86
Georges VAN DE VOORDE (1878-1964). Study of a frieze for the signs of the zodiac. Terracotta proof. Our model represents the sign of Aries. The final versions adorned the former Deutsche Bank, rue d'Arenberg in Brussels. This was a major project, begun in 1931, to which the sculptor devoted two years of his life. It was a difficult and thankless undertaking that he succeeded in, to the satisfaction of the harshest critics. Source: "Clarté, art et art décoratif, architecture" magazine, January 1939. Here we find illustrations of the versions dedicated to the lion signs in the magazine (pages 12 and 13). Le Vingtième" devoted a laudatory page to Georges Vandevoorde's statuary and in particular to these famous reliefs. Size: 31 x 14 cm. Provenance: Artist's studio. Collection of the Vandevoorde family since the mid-1960s (the spelling of the surname has no space in the civil register). We enclose a certificate of authenticity and provenance signed by Mr and Mrs Vandevoorde, the artist's grandchildren.
