Berner's surface spaces are visual studies of perception - meditative pictorial spaces in which stillness, density and energy are condensed into a timeless, clear form. This monochrome composition in magenta tones from 1969 is a striking example of this highly differentiated aesthetic. The small-format, hand-drawn sheet initially appears restrained, but on closer inspection reveals a multi-layered spatial depth.
