Lot no. 103
German Post War Bernd Berner Untitled (surface space). 1969. mixed media on firm wove paper. 34.5 x 39.5 cm. Signed and dated. Mounted in spots on support and framed behind glass (unopened). -Very good overall. With his "Flächenraum" compositions, Bernd Berner developed an independent pictorial language from the late 1950s onwards, which consciously distinguished itself from the expressive gestures of Art Informel. Instead of spontaneous painting action, he focused on the exciting relationship between surface, space and colour in a contemplative, reduced formal language. Berner's surface spaces are visual studies of perception - meditative pictorial spaces in which stillness, density and energy are condensed into a timeless, clear form. This monochrome composition in magenta tones from 1969 is a striking example of this highly differentiated aesthetic. The small-format, hand-drawn sheet initially appears restrained, but on closer inspection reveals a multi-layered spatial depth. Subtle lines and transparent layers of colour run through the magenta field like a gentle rhythm, creating a vibrant colour space with a lively presence. Mixed media on firm wove paper.
