Lot no. 8
German School. Circa 1510. 'Living Christ' Carved, polychromed, and gilded wooden sculpture. 52 x 53 cm.   A wonderful and expressive image of the crucified Christ. This sculpture was undoubtedly made in the vicinity of the master Tilman Riemenschneider (Germany c. 1460 - 1531) and could well have been carved by his own chisel. The similarities are evident in the characteristic features of the face, the beard, and the type of crown of thorns. The similarity in the treatment of the body is also remarkable.
