GÉRÔME (Jean-Léon)
Paris, 18 October 1889...
Autograph letter signed to a gentleman.
2 pages in-8 (20.5 x 13.2 cm), ink on paper, headed 65 boulevard de Clichy (address of Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio and home).
The artist clarifies the status of Mr Boussod, whom he had recommended in a previous letter.
Mr Boussod was "the head of Maison Goupil", a firm specialising in publishing and trading works of art and reproductions. With a few associates, he had taken over the work of founder Adolphe Goupil, with whom Gérôme maintained a family link: the artist had married his daughter.
Gérôme sent this letter in order to "clear up a personal error, should one occur". Indeed, Mr Boussod's namesake, his son, was a conservative politician with whom the addressee would not have wished to associate.
Inscriptions in red and blue pencil at the top of the first page.
Pages slightly browned.
