Lot no. 125
GERSON (Jean). [Opera]. Sermo de Passione Domini. - Prima pars. - Secunda pars. - Index. Basel, Adam Petri for Ludwig Hornken and Gottfried Hitorp, 1518. 4 parts (of 6) in one folio volume, ivory vellum with covers, smooth spine, large red morocco title-piece, smooth edges (Modern binding). Majestic edition of the theological works of Jean Gerson (1363-1429), chancellor of the University of Paris, nicknamed the doctor christianissimus. Perfectly complete copies are extremely rare. This copy contains the first two parts, the sermon on the Passion of Christ and the index; the third and fourth parts are missing. A superb two-column Gothic printing by the Basel typographer Adam Petri de Langendorf (1454-1527), embellished with ornamental lettering on a black background. The titles are decorated with three remarkable wood-engraved frames: two by Urs Graf and one by Hans Holbein the Younger. The frontispiece to the first part and the index features the same beautiful full-page woodcut depicting the author in pilgrim's costume with a shield bearing his arms. The frontispiece to the sermon on the Passion features a superb woodcut Cruxifixion by Ambrosius Holbein. The text is entirely rubricated in red and the initials are coloured in blue, yellow and red. A very fine copy in an elegant imitation binding. From the library of Roger Budin, Geneva, with bookplate. Marginal worm spots at the beginning of the index. Adams, G-502.
