An account of the greatest ascents by the great Italian mountaineer. Giusto Gervasutti (Cervignano del Friuli 1909 - Mont-Blanc du Tacul 1946) was one of the best Italian mountaineers of his time. In 1933 he made the second ascent of the south ridge of the Aiguille Noire de Peuterey, and made several attempts on the north face of the Grandes Jorasses, in the company of R. Chabod, with whom he made the second ascent in 1935, just after the victorious German team. In 1934, he also opened the great ice corridor that today bears his name on Mont-Blanc du Tacul. But it was with Lucien Devies and in the Écrins massif that he made the two greatest ascents of his career: the North-West face of l'Olan in 1934 and the North-West face of l'Ailefroide in 1936. It was while attempting the ascent of the superb north-east pillar of Mont-Blanc du Tacul, which now bears his name, that he fell during the abseiling retreat in the storm, which prematurely cost him his life.
