Lot no. 310
[GESCHICHTSBLATTER]. HOGENBERG (Frans). Lot of 58 engravings relating to the events of the 80 years war. Cologne, Atelier d Hogenberg, s.d. [1559 1573]. 58 raised engravings, marouflaged on paper, 20,5 x 28. Legended in German. Series of contemporary illustrations by Frans Hogenberg, his son Abraham and their pupils, dated between 1559 and 1573. The publication of newsreels was already in vogue in the 16th century, but Hogenberg specialised in this type of production with his series known as Geschichtsblatter: images depicting real political or military events in the Netherlands, Germany and France between 1558 and 1610: views of towns, battles, sieges, executions, ceremonies, etc. The plates were sold separately, and the illustrations were made by Frans Hogenberg, his son Abraham and their pupils. The plates were sold separately, which explains why Geschichtsblatter collections always feature a variable number of prints.
