Icones animalium aquatilium in mari et dulcibus aquis degentium... Ibid., 1560. 3 works in one folio volume, stiff vellum, red title on spine, red edges (19th century binding). A collection in one volume of three zoological treatises by the Swiss physician and naturalist Conrad Gessner (1516-1565), published in Zurich by Christoph Froschauer and devoted respectively to quadrupeds, birds and fish and aquatic animals.
Each of these three works is adorned with numerous woodcuts depicting all kinds of animals, both real and fabulous.
Bound at the end of the volume is a suite of 31 copper-engraved plates of écorchés and human anatomy, taken from a 16th-century edition of Portraits anatomiques by Jacques Grévin.
A copy given to the young Charles de Rohan-Soubise (1715-1787), with an ex-præmio of the Collège Louis-le-Grand signed by the Jesuit Jean Lavaud and dated 11 May 1728 bound at the head (repairs).
The first part of the book on fishes is missing 4 pages (pages L6, M1, M2 and M4), as well as the blank page Z6; important missing pages on pages B2-B3 of the book on quadrupeds. B2-B3 of the book of quadrupeds and to f. E5 of the first volume of fishes; some leaves repaired, notably at the beginning of the volume, sometimes on the text or iconography; some wetness throughout the volume; marginal tears; some anatomical plates redacted.
