Lot no. 48
GIANDOMENICO TIEPOLO (Venice, 1727 - 1804) Madonna and Child Oil on canvas, 43X32.5 cm Provenance: Vienna, Dorotheum, 9 June 2021, lot 169 (Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo) A pupil and collaborator of his father Giambattista, Domenico's earliest works date from the end of the fifth decade. In 1750 he moved with his father to Würzburg to decorate the residence of Prince Charles Philip of Greiffenklau and on his return from Germany he executed the frescoes of the cupola and presbytery of Saints Faustino and Giovita in Brescia (1754-55), which still show his father's influence. It was during the Villa Valmarana building site that the artist began to express himself more independently, producing scenes of contemporary life, also dedicating himself to a profitable graphic production with brilliant and imaginative mythological and costume scenes. This activity was particularly concentrated when he began the decoration of his villa in Zianigo around 1770, and it was during this decade that the canvas under examination should fall due to its proximity to the Saint Joseph and Child already in the Dal Zotto collection in Venice (cf. Mariuz, p. 146, table 285) and the Madonna and Child already in the H. Feist collection in Berlin Wannsee. Feist in Berlin Wannsee (cf. Mariuz, p. 114, table 294). Reference bibliography: A.
