Lot no. 111
[GIDE André (1869-1951)]. Les Poésies d'André Walter, posthumous work. Paris, Librairie de l'Art Indépendant, 1892; small square in-8, fawn morocco, gilt garland framing the boards, ribbed spine decorated with branches, inner frame with gilt branches at the corners, sand moire lining and endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover decorated in red and black, slipcase (E & A Maylander). This anonymous first edition caused a sensation. Published at the age of 23 and with a preface by Pierre Louÿs, only 190 copies were printed. Presumed to be a copy of Pierre Louÿs, one of 10 printed on Japon (n°3), the only large paper with one or two Chine. It bears a handwritten couplet on the false title signed André Walter: Un petit mouton se promène / Dans une lamentable plaine. Three pieces are attached to the volume: A note from Gide to Pierre Louÿs appearing to accompany the copy (the envelope is dated 28 February 1892). A proof sheet signed AG, "unique, drawn especially for my friend Pierre Louÿs", corrected proof of the page beginning "la plaine monotone...". (reminiscent of the couplet on the false title?). A very amusing card, specially printed: Monsieur Pierre Louÿs, 49 rue Vineuse, prie Monsieur André Gide de donner de ses nouvelles. An autograph letter from Pierre Louÿs, 4 pp. in-8 very dense, beginning with a poem on Sapho dedicated to André Walter, and commenting on the dissensions between the two men on Flaubert and Bovary. Naville, Bibliographie des écrits d'André Gide, p. 39, IV. - Ex-libris Charles Hayoit (title absent from his 5 sales catalogues).
