In-8°, publisher's full cloth binding, cold-stamped fillets on covers, gilt coat of arms on first cover, gilt title on spine. First edition illustrated with 2 folding maps in colour, 6 lithographed plates in colour and 27 figures in the text. Accounts of excursions in the Dolomites, with a chapter on geology. The lithographed colour plates after J. Gilbert show La Civetta and Lake Alleghe (frontispiece), the Catinaccio massif, Langkofel (or Sassolungo), Pelmo, the Croda Malcora (Croda Rossa) cirque near Cortina and Primiero castle. The engravings in the text are by Whymper. This is the first and one of the finest works entirely devoted to the Dolomites massif. A very fine, unblemished copy of this unusual and much sought-after work. Josiah Gilbert (Rotterham 1814 - London 1892) was an English painter and art critic. George Cheetham Churchill (Nottingham 1822 - Clifton 1906) studied law, but developed a passion for the natural sciences and geology. They were both members of the Geological Society of London. It was while reading the Murray guide "A handbbok of travellers for Southern Germany" published in 1838 that they discovered the Dolomites and decided to visit them, which they did together between 1861 and 1863.
