It belonged to the Duke of Mortemart (Louis de Rochechouart, duc de Mortemart 1681-1746) with his cipher on the spine, his arms on the boards and his bookplate ms. at the bottom of the title "Je suis au duc de mortemart". A great lover of books, prints and objets d'art, he was the grand-nephew of Madame de Montespan. The first Duke of Mortemart (Gabriel, 1600-1675), a playmate of the young Louis XIII, was his highly influential adviser throughout his reign. Binding faded (more solid than elegant restorations to corners and headpieces, small splits to hinges).
