Wear and traces of moisture on the boards, light soiling and foxing on the body of the book. Ownership label on rear flyleaf. Pierre Gilliard (1879-1962) was a Swiss-born tutor of French. He was invited to Russia to teach the children of the Duke of Leuchtenberg, and in September 1905 was appointed French tutor to the children of Nicholas II. From 1913, he was tutor to the heir, Tsarevich Alexei Nikolayevich. After Nicholas II's abdication, he accompanied the imperial family into exile in Tobolsk, but was separated from them when they were transferred to Yekaterinburg. After the assassination of the imperial family, he remained in Siberia, helping the investigator Nikolay Sokolov and unmasking an impostor claiming to be Alexei Nikolaïevitch. He returned to Switzerland in 1920 and in 1921 published the present work, also known as 'Thirteen Years at the Russian Court'. First edition.
