Comment: Born in Antwerp, Gillis III van Coninxloo was the emblematic representative of the Frankenthal school, which revolutionised landscape art in the 1580s. Like some of his compatriots of the Reformed faith, Coninxloo had to flee Antwerp after the city was taken over by Alexander Farnese in 1585. He found refuge in the free town of Frankenthal, in a mountainous environment that strongly inspired the landscapes of these painters from the "flat country". Gillis Hondecoeter and Alexander Kierincx, along with our artist, were the leaders of a new school of painting that overturned the rules of landscape painting. The painter left Germany in 1596 for Amsterdam, where he died in 1606, having brought a new vision of landscape painting to Holland.
