Lot no. 1627
Giovanni Antonio Canal gen. Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto gen. Canaletto (1697 Venice - 1768 Venice; respectively 1721/22 Venice - 1780 Warsaw) Successors.
Pair of views of Venice
Counterparts. View of St Mark's Square (Piazza di San Marco) to the west, with the Campanile di San Marco and the Libreria Marciana on the left, the Procuratie Vecchie and the Torre dell'Orologio on the right; view of the entrance to the Grand Canal to the east, with the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute on the right. The detailed vedutas of the Venetian School, enlivened by rich staffage, with effective depictions of light and intensely bright blue skies, are clearly influenced by Giovanni Antonio Canal and his nephew Bernardo Bellotto. Such views reflect the splendour of the city of Venice, one of the most important stops on a Grand Tour and the cavalier journeys undertaken by British aristocrats in particular in the 18th century. Towards the middle of the century, the demand for pictures of Venice increased, which was satisfied by specialised veduta painters (vedutisti). These were joined by prints, in particular the 38-part series of engravings "Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum" (1735-1742) by Antonio Visentini, who drew on works by Canaletto. Oil on canvas, doubl. 40 cm x 60 cm. Frame.
Follower of Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697 - 1768) and Bernardo Bellotto (1721/22 - 1780) known as Canaletto. A pair of views of Venice. Oil on canvas, relined.
