GIOVANNI BATTISTA CURLANDO (Turin, 1648 - 1710) Portrait of Victor Amadeus II (1666-1732) Oil on oval canvas, 72X57 cm Recent studies on Giovanni Battista Curlando, court painter under Duke Victor Amadeus, are due to Arabella Cifani and Franco Monetti. From 1675, the artist had close relations with the royal house and in 1682 was prior of the Compagnia di San Luca in Turin. Between 1688 and 1694, we know him in Bavaria in the service of Prince Max Emanuele and Prince Giuseppe Clemente: a post that proclaimed his international success. Back in Turin, the painter painted mainly portraits and worked as an appraiser, as a refined connoisseur of art, and on 4 March 1700 he was appointed 'Painter of the Court'. The portrait presented here depicts Victor Amadeus II when he was still relatively young, around the year 1700, 1703-1704 at the latest, and corresponds with the works known to us and in particular with the portrait in the Racconigi collections recognised to him by Cifani (fig. 1). Having said this, the exuberant Baroque frame typical of Piedmontese cabinet-making in the late 17th century and comparable with those in Palazzo Carignano is worthy of attention. We thank Arabella Cifani for the attribution and critical notes. Reference bibliography: A. Cifani, F. Monetti, Indagini per la storia dei ritrattisti a Torino nel Settecento.
