Lot no. 5
Giovanni Battista Foggini (attributed to) (1652 - 1725) - Sculpture depicting Mary Magdalene cast bronze, engraved H. 17 cm The figure, sculpted in the round, certainly held the Cross of Christ, now lost, as suggested by the pose of the arms. News of the attribution and the sculptural group of origin have come down to us through the oral communication of Ulrich Middeldorf of Florence, thanks to whom we can refer to the original group of origin depicting the Crucifixion, already in the Ginori collection. Foggini, a disseminator and interpreter of the Roman Baroque at the Florentine court of Cosimo III de Medici, was his favourite sculptor, thanks to his measured and elegant style, more borrowed from Algardi than Bernini. His workshop was therefore very active, always supervising the technical work of his assistants and pupils, while remaining the creator of the models. The sculpture is complete with a quadrangular red marble support, dimensions: 10.5x10.5x10.5 cm.Provenance:Ginori Collection, Florence;Collection of the Marquise Marita Guglielmi, Rome;Private collection, Rome.
