Lot no. 27
GIOVANNI BERNARDO LAMA (attr. to)
(active in Naples, c. 1530 - c. 1600)
Christ Carrying the Cross
Oil on canvas, 112.5X102.6 cm
The work shows stylistic affinities with a painting in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome that, previously attributed to Giulio Romano, Girolamo Muziano and Luis de Morales, is now referred to Leonardo Grazia da Pistoia (Pistoia 1503 ; Naples?, after 1548). Both ultimately depend on Sebastiano del Piombo's famous Christ Carrying the Cross for Don Fernando Silva, Count of Cifuentes (St. Petersburg, Hermitage). Having said this, similarities can be observed with the panel of similar subject matter sold by Sotheby's in Milan on 20 November 2007, lot 5, referring to Giovanni Bernardo Lama.
