Turin, private collection
Son of the famous vedutista Carlo Grubacs, Giovanni continued the family tradition with modern sensitivity, distinguishing himself for a painting that combines perspective precision, atmosphere and romantic taste. Trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, he was able to interpret the lesson of the great masters of the 18th century, from Canaletto to Francesco Guardi, through an intimate and vibrant gaze, capable of capturing the light and changing atmosphere of the lagoon. The two works represent some of the most iconic views of the Venetian city: St. Mark's Square and the Grand Canal with the Salute Church. In both, Grubacs demonstrates his mastery in combining rigour and poetry, offering images in which architectural reality blends with a refined light sensitivity. In Veduta di Piazza San Marco, the artist celebrates the magnificence of the monumental heart of Venice: the Basilica and the Campanile emerge with impeccable perspective balance, while the golden light reflecting on the pavement and facades lends the scene a serene and vital atmosphere. The small figures of passers-by animate the square, introducing a narrative rhythm that transforms the view into a vivid fragment of everyday life.
