Giovanni Maria Arduino
(c. 1580 - 1647) - Magdalene Oil on canvas 118 x 95 cm
The work depicts a penitent Magdalene caught in a moment of intense spiritual elevation. The saint, half-naked and wrapped in ample drapery, turns her gaze upwards in an attitude of ecstatic contemplation; beside her appear the skull and the book, traditional iconographic attributes of the theme. The work was published by Franco Moro in "Piacenza, terra di frontiera: pittori lombardi e liguri del Seicento" (2010), with attribution to Giovanni Maria Arduino, an artist active in the orbit of Carlo Francesco Nuvolone and Giovanni Stefano Danedi, among the protagonists of 17th century Lombard painting.
