Counterparts. Oval compositions. One portrait shows a young female beauty holding a golden crown in her right hand and an old man holding out a piece of gold; the other painting shows a bust portrait of a young woman with a flute. The Italian Baroque artist Giovanni Martinelli favoured painting allegories of refined symbolism, rare elegance and refined formal nobility. The artist focussed on depicting the elegance and beauty of female figures, usually with long, slender hands, slightly parted vermilion lips and hair held in a ribbon.
