Lot no. 122
GIOVANNI REDER (attr. to)
(Rome, 1693 - after 1764)
Landscape with hunting scene
Oil on canvas, 31.4 x 48 cm
Son and pupil of the accomplished battler Christian Reder active in Rome for the Rospigliosi family (see G. Sestieri, Repertorio della Pittura Romana della fine del Seicento e del Settecento, Turin 1994, vol. I, pp. 156-157, vol. III, fig. 965), Giovanni was also a skilled artist dedicated to the landscape genre. In confirmation of this attribution, we can cite the similar canvases in the Pallavicini Gallery in Rome, depicting a Gita in campagna and a Riposo durante la caccia, made famous by Federico Zeri (La Galleria Pallavicini in Roma, Firenze, Sansoni, 1959, nn. 349, 350), in which the artist enlivens the vast landscapes with figures of graceful elegance, in ways that are absolutely characteristic of him and that are also found in some paintings of Feasts and Hunts from the collection of the Rospigliosi Princes and preserved today in the Museum of Rome.
