Provenance: Nicholas Lanier Collection (1588-1666), his stamp (L.2885) lower right on one of the two leaves; Collection Jonathan Richardson Senior (1667-1745), his stamp (L.2183) on the mounting lower right, with the inscription "Primaticcio"; Collection Francis Abbot (1801-1893), stamped (L.970) lower right; Private collection, Paris The study of the hand holding the palm is preparatory to the right hand of Saint Lawrence in the painting The Glory of Saint Lawrence, painted in 1577, partially destroyed during the Second World War and now conserved at Empoli, Collegiata di S.Andrea (fig. 1). The other arm study seems to be a preparation, with a variation in the drapery, for the figure's right arm in the lower left-hand corner of the painting.
