GIUGLARIS Luigi. Manuscrit sans lieu ni nom, 1652; in-4 of [328] ff. covered with carefully calligraphed script, contemporary black morocco binding, muted ribbed spine decorated with richly decorated boxes, wide border of gilded fillets and scrolls on the boards, double central rectangle with diamond pattern radiating with scrolls, gilded edges. Manuscript presented by the translator, François Favier, to Christine de France. Very interesting manuscript of the translation from Italian into French by François Favier, advisor to the Duke of Piedmont. The Italian original appeared in Turin in 1650, while the first printing of Favier's translation did not appear until 1672 in Lyon. The date of 1652 given on the title and the handwritten annotations on the first endpapers suggest that this is not a copy of the printed text, but the translator's own copy, which he would have translated shortly after the Italian edition. Numerous differences in detail between the text and the printed version, as well as differences in the arrangement of the last introductory pieces, point in this direction. Similarly, a small quatrain in verse on the first endpapers, not reproduced in the printed version: "Le traducteur à son livre : Aprens de moy mon livre que ceux qui te liront / Sils sont gens de sçavoir tu leur pourras bien plaire / Sils sont des ignorens ils te mespriseront / Au gré de telles gens lon sçaurait rien faire." The fine decoration of the manuscript confirms the impression: an intaglio portrait of Christine de France, an architectural title-frontispiece drawn in pen and ink, and numerous free-hand interlaced fleurons, usually at the end of the chapters. The volume bears an ex-dono by Favier on the first endpaper "A Madame Royale", (Christine de France, sister of Louis XIII, mother of Charles-Emmanuel II). The luxurious black morocco binding is finely and richly decorated. Christine de France (1606-1663), daughter of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis, was married to Victor-Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy and Prince of Piedmont. She assumed the Regency after her husband's death in 1637. - A very fine copy. Backer & Sommervogel III, 1474 (cf. 17).
