Lot no. 111
Giulio Aristide Sartorio (1860 - 1932) - Study for allegorical figure (Probable sketch for the frieze of the Chamber of Deputies) charcoal and pencil on paper A large horizontal composition depicting a nude winged male figure, caught in a vigorous twist as he towers over and dominates a running or falling bull. The right arm, raised in an armed gesture, accentuates the upward tension of the figure, the outstretched wings amplify the dynamic effect, while the plastic mass of the animal occupies the lower band of the scene, generating a strong symbolic contrast between spiritual principle and earthly force. The work, realised on several sheets joined and applied on canvas, presents technical characteristics that can be traced back to a large preparatory cartoon destined for transposition onto a definitive support. The monumental setting, the plastic synthesis of the masses and the heroic rendering of the nude are in keeping with the language adopted by Sartorio for the allegorical frieze of the Chamber of Deputies in Palazzo Montecitorio, painted between 1908 and 1912. The figure appears to be an allegory of Victory or of the Spirit that dominates primordial energy, in line with the symbolic programme of the monumental cycle. The proposed chronology is based on close stylistic and compositional affinities with the figures of the Parliamentary frieze. Signed lower right.
