Giuseppe BEZZUOLI (Florence, 1784 - 1855)
Study of a man in Renaissance dress
Oil on canvas
(Restorations)
Study of a gentleman in renaissance clothing, oil on canvas, by G. Bezzuoli
22.24 x 15.16 in.
56.5 x 38.5 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Paris
This expressive head, probably a study for a character in a historical painting, illustrates Giuseppe Bezzuoli's fascination with the Renaissance. More historicist than Troubadour, Italian painting in the first part of the 19th century moved more quickly from Neoclassicism to Romanticism than the French school of painting. A pupil of Benvenuti and Sabatelli at the Florence academy, Bezzuoli went on to study in Rome, where he was obviously fascinated by Raphael, but also by the Dominiquin. Introducing the 'literary romantic' style to Florence with his Paolo and Francesca in 1816, he quickly became an influential artist, an apostle of romanticism whose artistic movement was magnificently celebrated in the recent Milan exhibition Romanticismo (Milan, Galleria d'Italia, Piazza Scala, museo Pozzo Pezzoli, 26 October 2018 - 17 March 2019).
