Lot no. 1690
Giuseppe Canella the Elder. (1788 Verona - 1847 Florence) Lively market day at "Les Halles" in Paris with a view of the Rue de la Tonnellerie Multi-figured, atmospheric, historically significant veduta and depiction of metropolitan life at the central market halls (French "Les Halles"), which were of the greatest importance for food of all kinds for many centuries until 1969. Another, smaller-format version of the painting on cardboard (around 1828) is in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris (inv. no. P35; size 14.5 cm x 19 cm), probably a study for the larger painting shown here. In 1815, the artist produced his first vedute; he had been working in Paris since 1823, where he received commissions from Louis Philippe and exhibited at the Salon, where he was awarded a gold medal in 1830. Canella moved to Milan in 1832 and later worked in Venice. Oil on canvas; signed and dated on the lower left. 1831, verso painting stamp by Ottoz (Elève de Mr Belot), Paris. 38 cm x 52 cm. Original frame. Provenance: from the important collection of the Frankfurt banking family von Bethmann, which has grown over generations. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1831. Artist's suppliers stamp by Ottoz, Paris, on the reverse. Original frame.
