Provenance: Private collection, Paris
From Italy to France via Spain, Giuseppe Canella was an excellent topographical painter who captured the lively atmosphere of the cities of his time. He travelled to Spain in the early 1820s before moving to Paris, where he stayed between 1823 and 1833, exhibiting at the Salon in 1826 and 1827. As with the three charming views we are presenting here, the views of Spain - which bear witness to the innovative urban planning undertaken by Charles IV - were generally painted on zinc, a lighter material that weighed less on the luggage of an itinerant artist.
