At the heart of his collection, sold in June 2025 by Artcurial, was Ville Verte, a 1952 masterpiece by Zao Wou-Ki in emerald tones, whose figures seemed to echo Alberto Giacometti's lamp-posts Tête de femme, Osselet and Étoile. A passionate amateur musician, Philippe Dennery had one last treasure. After playing a violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini for many years, he had found the instrument of a lifetime in the Guarneri del Gesù presented by Artcurial. A violinist's dream There are fewer than 150 Guarneri del Gesù violins in existence today, each bearing witness to a unique personality. Even more than his contemporary Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesù is celebrated for the expressive power and dramatic intensity of his instruments. For nearly three centuries, the greatest virtuosos - from Paganini to Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman - have chosen them for their exceptional resonance and sonic power. These instruments, admired as much for their rarity as for their brilliance, embody the very essence of the art and bear witness to the genius of Cremona and the golden age of violin making, which has never been equalled. The "ex Dennery" is distinguished by its rich, complex sound spectrum, capable of extraordinary projection without ever losing any of its subtlety. Its deep bass is matched by luminous, penetrating highs, giving the performer an almost unlimited range of expression. Every nuance has its place, from the most delicate intimacy to the fullness of the great concert halls.
