Beretti, Giuseppe e Carlo Francesco Maggiolini. L'officina del Neoclassicismo, Milan 1994, p. 57 ff.), who was strongly involved with his 'workshop' in Parabiago at the service of many of the most prominent families of the Milanese political and aristocratic scene, and not only. In this regard, how can we fail to mention, among other noble commissions, the two chests of drawers dated 1777 for Count Greppi (a well-known Milanese banker) today preserved in Milan, one in the Civiche Raccolte d'Arte (inv. Furniture 344, E. Colle, Museo d'Arti Applicate. Mobili e intagli lignei, Milan 1996, pp. 90-92, no. 93) and the other in a private collection (G. Beretti, Giuseppe e Carlo Francesco Maggiolini. L'officina del Neoclassicismo, Milan 1994, pp. 62-67 and G. Beretti, Il mobile dei Lumi. Milano nell'età di Giuseppe Maggiolini, Vol. I (1758 ; 1778), Milan 2010, pp. 414-416), among the absolute masterpieces in the panorama of European Neoclassicism. It is from these models that ours also derive, with a well-established construction scheme, with an under-shelf groove concealing a drawer and a front door that once opened disappears to reveal two drawers in pure walnut; they differ from the former, however, in the simplified ornamentation that leaves the surfaces free of complex intricacies, a characteristic shared by part of the Maggiolini workshop's production in the Napoleonic era and beyond. Some valuable works for Francesco Melzi d'Eril (former vice-president of the Italian Republic and, from 1807, duke of Lodi) date back to the early 19th century, such as the refined toilette of 1802, now in Monza in a private collection (Beretti 1994, pp. 166-171). The latter and other furnishings are also part of a recognisable corpus thanks to some sheets belonging to the rich maggioliniano fund now in the collections of the Gabinetto dei Disegni (Drawings Cabinet) at Castello Sforzesco, including those in the lot presented here (as well as the bedside tables in the next lot, n. 406), of which we transcribe the salient data For the front doors (one bears the signature Maggiolini Parabiago) see in, G.
