GIUSEPPE NUVOLONE
(Milan, 1619 - 1703)
Assumption
Oil on panel, 45.3X32.3 cm
Although there is an undoubted stylistic affinity between the brothers Giuseppe and Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (Milan, 1609 ; 1662), their production is today easily distinguishable thanks to the careful critical work of Filippo Maria Ferro. The scholar has collected a vast repertoire of images and has detailed the activities of the two artists, noting their differences despite their cultural and expressive contiguity, as is well documented in the work presented here. A pupil of his brother Carlo Francesco, Giuseppe despite the stylistic contiguity of the workshop would nevertheless assume his own physiognomy and independence, particularly after 1650, after the death of his brother and during his activity with the Savoy family, we can observe how his works found innovation thanks to the influence of Francesco Cairo.
We thank Filippo Maria Ferro for the attribution.
