GIUSEPPE PASSANO
(Genoa, 1786 - 1849)
Achilles mourns the death of Patroclus
Signed G. Passano F. 1820 on the edge of the shield lower right
Oil on canvas, 129.2X103.8 cm
Provenance:
Genoa, private collection
Known for his fresco cycles, we know very few paintings on canvas by Giuseppe Passano. Therefore, the painting under examination, signed and dated 1820, is an important find for tracing his activity, style and neo-classical character; in spite of the scarce critical annotations outlining a neo-Baroque artistic physiognomy. Giuseppe Passano, in fact, was an appreciated artist during the first decades of the 19th century, author of the frescoes depicting the heroines of the Old Testament in the nave of the Basilica delle Vigne (1842), the altarpiece painted in 1818 depicting the Miracle of Saint Isidore in the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Acqui, and the frescoes decorating the nave of the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista in Finale Ligure.
