Victor Emmanuel I (Turin, 1759 - Moncalieri, 1824) was King of Sardinia, Prince of Piedmont and Duke of Savoy. Although the revolutionary conquests of 1796 reduced its territory to the island, the abdication of Napoleon I in 1814 allowed it to return to the mainland, and then to the now defunct Republic of Genoa after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The day after Waterloo, freed from the French threat, the royal family saw the possibility of finally being reunited in their palace in Turin. In May 1814, the King left Cagliari and entrusted the regency to his wife Maria Theresa of Austria-Este. Giuseppe Verani stayed with her and painted this gouache for the sovereign in August 18151 before leaving the island with the queen. The Queen is shown with three of her daughters, two twins on the balcony beside her: Princess Maria Theresa, future Duchess of Parma and Piacenza, and Princess Maria Anna, future Empress Consort of Austria; and Blessed Maria Christina of Savoy, future Queen of the Two Sicilies, on the balcony to the left. The artist depicts himself in the street, passing on a memento of himself to his beloved monarch.
