Lot no. 69
Giuseppe VERMIGLIO Milan, circa 1587 - 1635 Saint Jude Thaddeus Oil on canvas Annotated 'S. TADAEUS' upper left Saint Jude Thaddeus, oil on canvas, annotated, by G. Vermiglio 61 x 49 cm (24.02 x 19.29 in.) Comment: This Milan-born artist trained in Rome in the studio of the Perugian painter Adriano Monteleone, with whom he is mentioned in 1604. In 1612, he painted The Incredulity of Saint Thomas for the Roman church of Saint Thomas dei Cenci at the request of the parish priest Onorato Rebaudi. At the beginning of the 1610s, he was immersed in the great Roman collections of painting that gave pride of place to chiaroscuro and owed so much to Caravaggio. Vermiglio's presence in the Eternal City is still attested in 1619, but we find him as early as 1621 in Milan, where he married a notary's daughter. From then on, commissions multiplied and spread out on a regular basis. The 1620s and 1630s were the two decades in which most of his work was produced, spreading Caravaggio's precepts throughout Lombardy. Another portrait of Saint Thadée of more modest dimensions was presented in our rooms on 20 January 2016 (lot 559). At that time, we saw an element of the Apostolado partially reconstituted in the catalogue of the Koelliker collection exhibition in Milan in 2006. Unlike that work, our painting presents a less close-up view of the saint, in bust form, reminiscent of that seen on the Penitent Saint Peter offered for sale in 2011 (anonymous sale; New York, Sotheby's, 9 June 2011, no. 23) or on the Saint Andrew offered by Christie's in 2020 (anonymous sale; London, Christie's, 23 September-7 October 2020, no. 65). Stylistically and in the choice of colours, particularly the yellow of the cloaks worn by the saints, our work seems very close to the canvas sold at Sotheby's in 2011. Perhaps it should be seen as two works from the same group.
