GLENNIE (John David). Views on the continent. London, Hullmandel, 1841. In-folio, bound in half havana morocco with corners, decorated ribbed spine, gilt title to spine, covers in percaline (later binding). Rare first edition, with a lithographed colour title and 25 lithographs of picturesque places in Switzerland, Chamonix and Italy, based on the author's drawings, including Geneva, Mont-Blanc and the Bionnassay glacier seen from the Col de Voza, the Jardin seen from the Couvercle, Mont-Blanc seen from the Jardin, the Col du Bonhomme, the Grand St Bernard, etc.
The Reverend John David Glennie (1796-1874) was one of the founders of the famous Marlborough College in Wiltshire. He was trained in landscape drawing by Samuel Prout, a renowned artist inspired by Constable, Tuner and Ruskin. From his trip to the continent in 1838, he brought back a collection of drawings which he published in two volumes, in 1841 and 1849 respectively. The latter, cited by Abbey (no. 40), concerns Germany and Switzerland.
