Lot no. 266
Glöckner, Hermann
Wedge black and white to the left. 1968-74. folding and tempera on Japan. 50.2 x 36 cm. Verso inscribed Faltgrafik 1968 + 74 - Partly slightly browned, very occasional pinpoint surface rubbing, verso at right in one place small transfer of paper, overall very good. Colour fresh.
Provenance: Werner Timm Collection, Berlin. - Guided by his passion for geometry, Glöckner utilises the line and elementary basic forms for his artistic design language. From a repertoire of forms compiled over many years, like a musée imaginaire, he created his memorable folds between 1960 and 1970, which are central to his work and can be traced back to his work in the 1930s. Glöckner folds and unfolds sheets several times, in half, in quarters, vertically or diagonally. The folded lines in the paper give rise to areas of colour that create the pictorial form and at the same time detach it from the picture ground. He paints some of the coloured areas in black and contrasts them with the light-coloured underlying paper in a harmoniously balanced composition. He chooses the paper very carefully, because: You need very specific paper that can withstand the folds and still leave the folds sharp. The folds remain intact and everyone can see how the sheet was created. (quoted from Hermann Glöckner, sammlung.staedelmuseum.de, 15.11.24).

The breaks remain intact and everyone can see how the sheet was created.'(Hermann Glöckner, sammlung.staedelmuseum.de, 15.11.24).
