GNATHIAN SKYPHOS WITH GRAPEVINE MOTIF Ca. 330 - 300 BC. A particularly nice example of a typical drinking cup from Southern Italy in the highly decorative Gnathian style. The vessel is decorated with geometric and vegetal motifs on a black background. The decoration on the front side includes a highly stylised vine pattern consisting of grapes, leaves, and tendrils around a central polychrome palmette. The backside features a simple transverse band of ivy from which descend three vine tendrils. For similar see: Christie's, Live Auction 21909, Antiquities, Lot 49. Size: 165mm x 100mm; Weight: 135g.
