Lot no. 36
GOBINEAU (Arthur de). The Abbey of Typhaines. Paris, E. Maillet, 1867. In-12, jansenist brown morocco, C. G. under a count's crown gilt in the centre of the first plate, interior lace, green silk lining and endpapers, edges gilt on marbling (Period binding). First edition, quite rare according to Clouzot. It was not printed on large paper. André Malraux considered L'Abbaye de Typhaines to be "an inferior Chartreuse de Parme, solid nonetheless, and one of the rare romantic novels that we can read without any boredom and without too much irony". A very fine copy bound in the author's cipher, with his dry stamp at the top of the title. Discreet dings on the spine and on one spine joint. Carteret, I, 345 - Clouzot, 133 - André Malraux, "L'Abbaye de Typhaines", NRF, 1922, XIX, p. 98.
