GODEAU (Antoine). Éloges des evesques qui dans tous les siècles de l'Église ont fleury en doctrine et en sainteté. Paris, François Muguet, 1665. In-4, red morocco, gilt fillet, fleur-de-lys at the corners, coat-of-arms in the centre, spine decorated, spotted edges (Binding of the period). First edition, dedicated to the bishops of France. Antoine Godeau (1605-1672) began his career in the worldly sphere before entering Holy Orders and obtaining the bishopric of Grasse and then Vence from Richelieu. A prolific writer, he was a member of the Académie française from its inception. Madame de Sévigné considered him to be the finest wit of his time. Copy in red morocco with the coat of arms of the city of Marseille. From the library of Henri Bonnasse (1899-1984), an illustrious banker and collector from Marseilles, with bookplate. Not included in his sale. Some copies have a title-frontispiece which is absent from this one. The title leaf may have been added.
