Antoine Godeau (1605-1672) began his career in the worldly sphere before entering Holy Orders and obtaining the bishopric of Grasse and then Vence from Richelieu. A prolific writer, he was a member of the Académie française from its inception. Madame de Sévigné considered him to be the finest wit of his time.
