The illustrations are steel engravings based on drawings by Engelbert Seiberts (1813-1905), court artist to King Maximilian II of Bavaria, and include numerous thematic illustrations in the text, vignettes and finishes. The engravings were made and printed by A. Schleich (Adrian Schleich; 1812-1894) and M. Storz (Martin Storz; born 1816). The typeface was specially cast in the 'Slovo-litnyakh O.I. Lehman' in St. Petersburg. Publisher's composite binding. Leather spine, calico covers, gilt and hot stamping on top cover and spine, ornamented paper composite endpapers. Very good condition. Wear to spine and edges of covers, minor soiling, foxing. This gift edition of Goethe's tragedy was first published in 1889 by A.F. Marx. This luxurious illustrated edition was dedicated to the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, wife of the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovitch, son of Alexander II.
