All the pamphlets in this collection were published in the 'Narodnoe izdanie' series of V. Dumnov's bookshop, under the publisher's name 'Nasledniki brat'ev Salaevykh'. Vladimir Vasilievich Dumnov (1854-1926) was a publisher and bookseller who, from 1885, ran the Nasledniki brat'ev Salaevykh house in Moscow (after marrying a niece of F. Salaev). Under his management, the house became widely known for publishing textbooks and teaching materials, as well as works of fiction (including Gogol). In 1893, A.F. Marx bought the exclusive rights to publish Gogol's works from Dumnov for the then unprecedented sum of 150,000 roubles.
