Lot no. 1325
Gothic religious panel in oak, carved in relief, depicting Saint George defeating the dragon
Beneath a pointed archway adorned with Flamboyant Gothic foliage motifs, the armoured saint wields a spear and subdues the monster, whilst a figure prays at his feet, illustrating the victory of Good over Evil in Christian iconography. The background is meticulously crafted, creating a three-dimensional narrative scene with powerful expressiveness in the faces and great attention to detail in the weapons, armour and dragon. The sculpture exhibits a deep brown patina, as well as cracks and wear characteristic of aged wood, typical of the Flamboyant Gothic style. Burgundy, France, late 15th century. 90 x 55 cm. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
